Massett (1820-1898) worked as an actor, composer, author, monologist, &c. His papers are at Georgetown University. In part: "110 W. 40th St., New York.I thank you for letting me have the manuscript of your new song, "My Heart Is Free." There is a simplicity in the melody, and a charm in the words, which I much like. And I shall take great pleasure in singing it, at my concerts this winter. I am obliged to you for placing my name on the title page, and I sure [sic] Mr. George Law will be complimented and pleased by the dedication." Signed in full by Helen Dudley Campbell.
