Hamburg America, established in 1847, ran the first German transatlantic steamship line, carrying mail to the US as well as Norwegian and British emigrants. By 1896, the line owned a fleet of 102 vessels. The SS "Holsatia," built in 1868, made voyages to and from New York from 1868 to 1878. The SS "Westphalia," also built in 1868, operated from 1868 to 1886. The SS "Silesia," built in 1869, sailed the route from then until 1887.
